This primary and secondary school serves a farming community. The school opening was a great event with local parents cooking up a feast for our International visitors. Once the building opened students came from far and wide to attend and get their first experience of computers. Some cycling over 15 km to study. The school has since hosted several visits by students and sponsor groups.
Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia - Muslims make up about 5% of the Cambodian population. This school, in a majority Muslim area, was really wanted by the community, who attended the opening ceremony in large numbers. Many families are now able to educate their girls in this school.
Kampot, Cambodia - The Texas Peak School lies on the main road to Kampot and sits along a beautiful wooded driveway. As a secondary school with an adjoining primary school, the facility is working hard to empower the young women in attendance.
The school is supported by Texas Peak, an Australian company that distributes Brooks sporting goods. The owners of this company have been supporters of RideAid since our inception. Bruce Fitch is a Director of Texas Peak and a Director of Rideaid. After opening this school, Texas Peak Director Sanjay Jain went on to start Yatra, an NGO focused on working in his home country, India.
Kandal Province, Cambodia - The Hale School was originally a primary school for which Rideaid built a new secondary school. Brother school to the renowned Hale school in Perth, this school has benefited from annual educational and cultural visits from Hale school. There are currently 5 computers in place and some excellent teachers and students. With the opening of a new road and bridge, this school is now accessible from Phnom Penh in one hour.
The Mortgage Force School is situated on the way to Sihanoukville at the Koh Kong turnoff. Many of the community are merchants trading on the busy roadside. The old wooden school was dilapidated and proved to be a challenging location to construct a new one. The new school is a secondary school with a primary school adjacent.

Ratanakiri, Cambodia - In 2009, RideAid supported a visionary project in remote Ratanakiri province aimed at helping poor rural children of high ability and ambition attend a boarding house and school in Phnom Penh. We provided a vehicle and funding from Australian Ironman Guy Leech to assist this project. Thirty-eight young people were involved in this program. The program is now finished and we and another donor are providing accommodation and financial support for 17 of them to finish school and 4 to attend advanced studies.
Sihanoukville, Cambodia - RideAids support for Mlop Tapang takes many shapes. The Drop-In Centre was our first project with the organization, and it continues to this date, albeit in a new location. The centre was formed to address the needs of homeless children with substance abuse problems. These children, attracted by the availability and low cost of glue sniffing, are often at risk of becoming addicted to this substance. These youth can be problematic and disruptive when integrated into normal programs. There are often emergencies that require the assistance of specially-trained staff. RideAid partnered with Mlop Tapang to build and staff a stand-alone centre, open 24 hours a day, focusing on these youths.
Sihanoukville, Cambodia - Implementing partner M’Lop Tapang aims to link training to effective, viable income generation opportunities for young men and women (age 15+). By providing the opportunity to learn a skill, these students are empowered to support themselves and their families in the future. We equip them with life skills including Khmer and English language, health and drug awareness, and budgeting before entering the workforce so they are able to maintain employment in an increasingly competitive environment. Currently, 70 children are learning skills in motorbike mechanics, electrical repair and installation, welding, and screen printing. The girls’ centre trains over 30 students – many of whom formerly worked in karaoke bars or as sex workers – in sewing, arts and crafts, and hospitality skills.
Kampot, Cambodia - The Vocational Training Program (VTP), implemented by RideAid partner Epic Arts, is the only course of its kind in Southeast Asia. The progam gives talented young Cambodians with disabilities the opportunity to harness their creative potential, develop their skills as professional performers, and act as advocates for integration. In March 2009 eleven physically disabled or deaf students began the first full time VTP course. Upon graduation, they will go on to lead community workshops and performances as part of Epics ongoing work in Cambodia.
